PUTTING IT BACK TOGETHER

Tim Temeyer of Treynor works for the Army Corps of Engineers, a civilian arm of the Department of Army. Tim explained that Army Corps employees are involved with construction and management of civil works such as river dams and flood control. They also work at construction for the military and they respond to special needs during wartime. Tim answered a call to help reconstruct facilities in northern Iraq. He spent the first four months of this year in Mosul to coordinate efforts to rebuild buildings, power plants and electrical lines, oil delivery systems, and roads damaged by the war or by neglect. Tim noted that security is a big issue while working there. He always traveled with a convoy that was guarded by an armed group. He did not encounter any serious situations during his tour of duty at Mosul. Despite all the ‘negative’ news about happenings in Iraq, Tim explained, there was a lot of good works going on that doesn’t get in the news. Many Iraqis are thankful for the reconstruction efforts. An inscription Tim saw inside a damaged palace stated in part ‘the dark time is finished’ in reference to the prewar time.
