Treynor Football & Fellowship of Christian Athletes
Steve Owens started by paying tribute to Les Harvey, who passed away this week. Les was a charter member of the Treynor Optimist club. Steve said that Les was always talking about goal setting, which is important to everyone, but critical to youth.
Steve Owens has been involved with Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA) for 20 years. He has been going to their national camp in Pella, Iowa the past 7 years. This was a sad year because they had a group of Haitians from Kansas City at the camp. Two of the boys from Haiti drowned. “Don’t take life for granted”, Owens emphasized.
The local FCA group has 10-12 youth involved. The first meeting this year is Sunday, September 12 at Steve Owens’ house. All youth are welcome.
Steve has been involved with Baseball Chapel Ministry with his wife and daughter. The ministry provides chaplains in every city that has a major baseball league. They meet with the teams before a game. Normally they have 10-12 people from the Royals join the pre-game meeting. They meet with the visiting team separately and have 8-10 players attend. Steve is excited because the new Royals’ stadium will have a family room where spouses of the players can take their children during the game. Steve’s message for players is “In life, we need to finish strong.”
For football, Steve started coaching in 1994. For football, the upper classmen are providing great leadership this year. With two fast guys in the backfield and experienced quarterbacks, they will be competitive this year. They have 52 players out this year.
Treynor is in class 1A this year. Steve noted that all eight teams in the conference won their first game this year and seven won this week. Therefore, the conference schedule will be difficult. Jim Clausen noted that this is the 50th year of Treynor 11-man football.
Steve also noted that the track team sent 11 youth to the state track meet. They scored points in all events they competed in.
