BENEFITS FROM THE CREIGHTON ILAC MISSION

Dr. Stephanie Denton recently graduated from the Creighton University physical therapy program. Stephanie reported that she participated with fourteen other students as an intern in the mission effort of Creighton with the Institute for Latin American Concerns (ILAC). Last April Stephanie traveled to the Dominican Republic and lived in the ILAC facilities there. Stephanie explained that she joined the other interns to volunteer their expertise at several private and governmental group homes, clinics, hospitals, and orphanages in the Dominican Republic. Stephanie said they were asked to stay with a village family for a few days to learn about their culture and living conditions. The lack of good potable water and sufficient waste water treatment results in problems with parasites in many of the native people, Stephanie noted. Sometimes tradition or ignorance leads to ineffective, non-appropriate, or even no treatment to resolve health problems, especially of the young. While the interns were able to contribute much to the treatment methods for physical problems, Stephanie said she came to value more her living conditions and the medical resources available here in the U.S. Thus, the interns come to realize that they might receive the most from the ILAC mission.
