White Landscaping

Matt White, owner of White Landscaping, spoke on January 30.  He started making retaining walls in 1992.  Originally they were formed with railroad ties or CCA timbers.  Today 99% of the retaining walls are cement block.

Retaining walls can be up to four feet tall without any support.  If higher than that, he uses a retaining fabric.  The general rule is the fabric should be one foot into the bank for every foot height of the wall.  The fabric lies between the block and goes straight back into the dirt.

There are a wide variety of block and block colors to use today.  A popular scheme today uses a system of various shapes of block, to make the wall look more natural.

Matt also installs pavers for walkways and patios.  Pavers will endure longer than cement for walking areas.  He does not recommend using rock salt on the pavers or any cement .patio areas.

Matt has installed some water fonts.  he expects more people and businesses will install water storage systems in the future, where rain water is trapped and used for watering lawns and gardens.

In the winter Matt works on snow removal.  For six years he also framed houses, which was a great learning experience.

Matt has three employees and strives to deliver quality instead of hiring more employees and going or quantity.  His website is whitelandscaping.net.
