THE FIRST 48 HOURS
Detective Larry Cahill of the Omaha Police Department spoke to Club members about investigating homicide cold case files. Larry has been in law enforcement for sixteen years, but the past couple years he has worked in homicide investigations. According to Larry there are about sixty cold case files ranging back nearly fifty years. These cases have no leads for officers to investigate. Larry noted that technical developments have provided opportunities to reopen case investigations. For example, he used ten-year-old DNA evidence to identify a suspect. However, Larry explained, most cases are solved within the first 48 hours when evidence and consequences of the crime are fresh.
