FIGHTING METH USE
Council Bluffs Police Sargent Chuck Gorman spoke to Club members about his work with the Southwest Iowa Narcotics Enforcement Task Force. Chuck explained he is Operations Sargent for the task force that includes eight detectives and an Iowa National Guard representative who work in the counties of Harrison, Pottawattamie, and Mills. Working in this position for several years, Chuck has observed that methamphetamine "meth" misuse is driving most of the crime in southwest Iowa. Most of the persons they arrest are addicted to meth, Chuck noted. It is too easy to get and too easy to get addicted to, Chuck explained, so it is very dangerous for anyone, especially youth, to experiment with. It destroys the body with progressive use. Last year 84 felons were arrested, 62 search warrants were exercised, and $120,000 was confiscated by the Task Force, Chuck stated. But, it takes the concern and involvement of family and friends to educate and prevent the tragic consequences of meth use by individuals. The Task Force will continue to work to reduce the supply available
