A REPORT FROM THE MAYOR

Treynor Mayor Charles Killion spoke to Club members and guests about city administration issues addressed by the City Council.  Killion stated work has begun on new housing development north of the city limits.  The first phase of fifty homes is planned the next twelve months.  There could be a couple hundred new homes within ten years.  The current water and sewer facilities are adequate Killion noted.  Treynor has about 300 homes at present and the city has capacity to serve twice that number before major infrastructure changes are needed.  Another water well is planned north of town and the sewer treatment system can be expanded.  Killion stated the city is in good financial shape.  Last year revenues exceeded expenditures.  Treynor has a Triple A bond rating and is paying off bonded indebtedness on schedule.  From the 1% Local Option Sales Tax, the City has received $1.5 million over the 11 year history of the tax.  This has been used for tax relief (30%), water systems (20%), sewer systems (20%), general fund (20%), and storm sewers (10%).  Killion said the City will likely continue to contract with the county for law enforcement and Iowa Waste Systems for waste pickup as these services are satisfactory overall.  The City has a consulting firm to assist with planning for future growth.  State limitations on indebtedness restrict city actions to facilitate development.
